In most circumstances, the number of answer choices should be kept to a relatively small number – just four or perhaps five at most – especially in telephone surveys. Psychological research indicates that people have a hard time keeping more than this number of choices in mind at one time. When the question is asking about an objective fact, such as the religious affiliation of the respondent, more categories can be used. For example, Pew Research Center’s standard religion question includes 12 different categories, beginning with the most common affiliations (Protestant and Catholic). Most respondents have no trouble with this question because they can just wait until they hear their religious tradition read to respond.

Renowned for its short and sweet surveys, OnePoll is a great site for dipping in and out of, without having to dedicate loads of time to. As one of the earliest survey sites to be set up, OnePoll certainly has longevity. Founded in the UK, it is open to US users and those further afield and runs polls for the press and leading brands. This means the content is more engaging than it can be elsewhere and you can find yourself answering questions about celebrities or gossip. Many users praise their surveys for being quick, and even better – fun! Topics are not as dry as they can be on other websites, and by keeping the surveys brief, OnePoll is less likely to leave you bored or frustrated.
The survey building interface walks you through adding your questions, and is reminiscent of Windows 2000 in its simplicity. You can’t add images or logic to your questions with the free version, but you can mandate answers and give respondents the option of filling out an “other” category for each question. While most of these companies advertise that you can earn upwards of $18 or so an hour, the reality is that you're not going to make that much once you figure in your gas expenses and wear and tear on your car. Also, work may not always come in consistently. I would recommend doing more than one of these if you really want to make it worth your while.

Convenience: 4.5/5.0 – While the sign up form is easy to fill out, you will have to enter more information about yourself up-front than other survey companies ask for. Typically, you just need to enter your email address and create a password to join, but Ipsos also requires your name and physical address. We only gave a slightly lower rating for this because the sign-up process is still very quick and painless.


First, Naví logs himself into his Doodle account. Creating a free Doodle account isn’t necessary, but certainly saves you time if you create online surveys often. He then enters the title of his online survey – because he has an account, his name and email address is already filled in. Though it’s optional, Naví can also fill out the location where the group will meet (either an address or vague description such as ‘in the park’ or ‘in a box with a fox’, because no one would want to meet in a house with a mouse, that’s just silly). There’s also a text field for a description of up to 500 characters so that he can add important details to the online survey such as ‘bring your own yoga mat’.
Now there are alot of online survey or poll but repeated questions on eg income/age range, which industries you work in etc are common ones we need to repeatedly reply to even if its a one word different question or range. The API will auto fill in these surveys we intend to participate instead and we can copy those not-answered before questions save into our database for future references.

It's not all about your own records. Your contacts and customers took the time to take your survey, so it'd be nice for you to take a minute and say thank you. But it doesn't even have to take a minute of your time. All you need to do is have Zapier automatically send an email to each person who fills out your survey. You could even include extra info about your company, or perhaps a special coupon code as an extra thanks.


Many of these offerings provide rich toolsets for survey design and a number of amenities to create better-designed surveys, starting with a range of questions. However, designing, executing, and analyzing the results of high-quality surveys can still require a level of expertise that can be gotten through extensive training. Indeed, while my reviews didn't discuss acquiring and evaluating survey samples in-depth, as they are only incidental to the tools, this is a discipline in and of itself.

Of course, FlexJobs is not the only site for finding remote work and jobs you can do from home. Upwork is the largest marketplace for freelancers in the world, with demand for nearly any remote-friendly skill set. Then there are the niche sites, like We Work Remotely, where the majority of job posters are early stage startups looking for talented engineers. Still, FlexJobs may be the winner: its robust, easy-to-navigate system offers tens of thousands of jobs from thousands of employers at any one time. If you’re serious about finding remote work you can do from home or on the road, there’s no better place to look.


Some of the “gotcha” job offers from the past include check-cashing schemes, mystery shopping, medical billing “jobs” that require you to purchase expensive computer software, and craft-making jobs that ask you to pony up the cash for materials before you get started. And let’s not forget about the famous envelope-stuffing scam that was nothing more than a pyramid scheme designed to siphon money from as many people as possible.
Focus groups are very different from pilot tests because people discuss the survey topic or respond to specific questions in a group setting, often face to face (though online focus groups are sometimes used). When conducting focus groups, the surveyor typically gathers a group of people and asks them questions, both as a group and individually. Focus group moderators may ask specific survey questions, but often focus group questions are less specific and allow participants to provide longer answers and discuss a topic with others. Focus groups can be particularly helpful in gathering information before developing a survey questionnaire to see what topics are salient to members of the population, how people understand a topic area and how people interpret questions (in particular, how framing a topic or question in different ways might affect responses). For these types of focus groups, the moderator typically asks broad questions to help elicit unedited reactions from the group members, and then may ask more specific follow-up questions.
